Paris’ Dawson Rogers wins High Jump title to lead LIC at state
(CHARLESTON) — Dawson Rogers saved his best performance for the biggest stage. The Paris junior recorded a personal best in the finals of the Class 2A high jump to win the IHSA state championship on Saturday at Eastern Illinois University.
That was the top finish by a Little Illini Conference athlete at the three-class, three-day track meet. Top team honors went to Olney, with the Tigers total of 22.5 points good for a 12th-place finish in the Class 2A meet.
Rogers and 22 others advanced to the finals with a jump of 1.90 meters. However, in the finals, Rogers jumped a personal best of 2.09 meters (6′ 10.25″) to separate himself from the field by a full two-inch margin.
Other top LIC finishes came from the Olney tandem of Gavyn Cothern (a second in the long jump and a fifth-place finish in the high jump), and Quaid Berger (fourth in the 3200 meter run, and sixth in the 1600).
In the Class 1A meet, Miles Hardiman of Robinson led the way individually with a sixth place finish in the 110 meter high hurdles. The Newton 4×400 relay team of Matthew Haskett, Parker Harris, Hayden Borgic, and Henry Will earned points with a ninth-place finish.
